Michael Nace began playing music in the acclaimed math rock trio Drill For Absentee in 1995. After releasing their self-titled debut 7” in 1996 and their follow-up EP “Circle Music” in 1998, the band finally called it quits in late 1999. Seeking out a new music project, Michael began working on new songs on his acoustic guitar that featured the same rhythmic and conceptual styles found in DFA’s music, but with a more melodic, song-oriented approach.
Longtime DFA supporter Daniel Dudarec of the Czech-based Minority Records agreed to release his debut solo record and, in 2001, “The Voyage Out” was recorded and released. It was produced by Geoff Turner who, along with a cast of impressive math rock legends, helped to craft an inspired first album, coloring Michael’s early songs with a mix of layered and esoteric textures. Michael’s second record, “Measured in Leagues of Joy,” was released in in 2003, this time by Japanese-based Stiff Slack Records. It too featured a math rock crew of musicians and Geoff Turner at the producer’s helm, this time lending a more robust rhythm section to the songs. The third record, “Your Meekness Gives Me Hope,” was self-released in 2005, and marked a dramatic turn in Michael’s songwriting. The record featured a large, alt-country/rock n’ roll backing band that lent a big, rollicking sound that again was produced by Geoff. In 2006, Michael’s side project, The Nace Family, released “The Good Work of the Dead” on the American Ionik Records label. This record, which was released on 12” white vinyl only, featured a series of traditional old-time tunes that Michael wrote that were processed and rearranged by the Nace Family bandmates.
Now, in 2009, Michael is set to release “Forsaken by a Friend” on Sun Sea Sky Productions. “Forsaken” is a journey back to the aesthetics of “The Voyage Out,” and features some of the most cutting and personal songs that Michael has ever written.
